Peter Rossiter Original Artwork - Oil Paintings
I came to live in Pembrokeshire in 1993. Long before I had been a frequent visitor to Wales and I date my earliest Welsh connections to summer holidays spent regularly in the Croesor valley near Penrhyndeudraeth. It was through the paintings by my grandfather, Martin Bloch (1883-1954), whose works hang in the National Gallery of Wales, that I always associated Wales with art and it was on those early visits as a child that I first began to draw the landscape from life with conte pastels. To this day I can still walk the hills and mountains of that part of Snowdonia in my mind's eye and when I recently decided to start painting again seriously it was the view outside the cottage where I used to stay looking towards Cnycht that was the first picture I painted in oils after having put them aside for several years. Now my inspiration comes from local landscapes and the places I visit up and down this part of Wales, I also draw on sketches made further afield, recently I have done a series of pictures of Tenby. Some of the Tenby pictures take reality as a starting point, the main features of the place are still recognisable, but the image has turned into a kind of musical variation on a theme. Recent pictures of Ffestiniog show a more conventional approach but I always aim to be more than simply topograghical. I have done some work on a commission basis but on the whole prefer to work with a subject as and when it inspires me. I find elements of local history very exciting, for example, the early sailing trade across the Atlantic from local ports like Cardigan, Aberaeron and Aberystwyth. I am also very conscious of the current problems that farmers are having in this area today. so although some of my work may seem to be like a dream set in another world unconnected with reality, there are several paintings in which these interests and concerns are there, not far beneath the surface I show and sell works at:
